Ongoing monitoring

Common questions about ADHD assessments

Answers to some of the questions we are most frequently asked about adult ADHD assessment.

Is the assessment completed by a doctor?
Yes. All assessments are completed personally by Dr Roji Thomas, NHS Consultant Neuropsychiatrist (GMC No. 5194864). Verify on the GMC register → The assessment is never delegated to an associate or non-medical practitioner.
Is the assessment NICE-compliant?
Yes. Assessments follow current NICE guidance and include a detailed clinical interview, review of developmental history and careful consideration of differential diagnoses.
How long does the assessment take?
The assessment usually takes approximately 90–120 minutes. Information from questionnaires and collateral history is also reviewed as part of the overall assessment process.
Can the assessment be completed by video consultation?
Yes. Assessments can be completed either face-to-face in Sutton Coldfield or via secure video consultation. Please note this affects how any medication is managed afterwards — see “Do you prescribe ADHD medication?” below.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. Following the assessment you will receive a comprehensive diagnostic report outlining findings, diagnosis where applicable, and clinical recommendations.
Will my GP receive a copy of the report?
With your consent, a copy of the report can be sent directly to your GP or other relevant healthcare professionals.
Do you prescribe ADHD medication?
This depends on how your assessment was carried out. If you’re assessed in person in Sutton Coldfield, Dr Thomas can start and manage your medication directly, then arrange shared care with your GP. If you’re assessed by video, medication is managed by our specialist prescribing partner who handle dose titration and ongoing prescriptions. Either way, your treatment is safely monitored — the right route depends on how your assessment is carried out.
What if I do not meet the criteria for ADHD?
Not everyone assessed will receive a diagnosis. Where ADHD criteria are not met, the report will still provide a considered clinical opinion on the most likely explanation for your difficulties.
